The Arkansas eTraveler

What would an EV save on your commute?

The same arithmetic I ran on my own drive, with your numbers in it. Fill in the blanks and the answer updates as you type.

Your drive

Use the odometer, not an estimate. Include the detour to daycare.

I drive miles round trip,

days a year.

My car gets miles per gallon,

and gas near me costs $ a gallon.

The electric car

Efficiency is the number on the dash. Charging wastes a little, so the calculator bills you for 10 percent more than the dash shows, the way your meter does.

The EV gets miles per kilowatt-hour.

At home I pay $ per kilowatt-hour,

and my nearest fast charger posts $ per kilowatt-hour.

I would charge percent of my miles away from home.

Your home rate is on the last page of your power bill, and an overnight rate is usually the cheapest energy you can buy. For the fast charger, use the price posted in that network's app for the station you would actually use. If you have no home charging at all, put 100 in the last blank.

What it costs you

Is your fast charger a good one?

Your local price in red, against prices I track around the country. The vertical line on each bar is what a mile costs you in the gas car above.

Sources: the national average is Paren's figure for the second quarter of 2026. The two Walmart numbers come from my own register of every station in that network, kept since October 2024. They measure different things. The on-peak average is what the sign says during the day. The overnight average is what a growing share of those stations charge between 10 at night and 9 in the morning.
